My blogs on land and post were written some months ago when I had some time to read, research and write. I haven’t had that time recently so have nothing written ready for release. I’m also struggling for time to write. So we will see some quick pieces of writing and some writing from other people that I enjoy.
This blog was written yesterday and I am reflecting back on my land and property blogs. It was a lot of writing.
If I had to summarise the issue it’s this:
Our political system is broken.
Our economic system is broken.
All other problems flow from these two factors.
Allocation and use of land.
Our sense of community.
Our sense of society.
Inequality and unfairness.
I could keep listing things, but ultimately the source of the fix can be traced back to fixing our politics and our economics.
We can find endless examples in other countries where their economic or political systems are marginally better than ours in some ways and we always see benefits flowing from that. We could change to be more like them. But we do not.
The reason we do not change is because the system is not broken for some people. The system is working for some people. It’s working for those in change, or in other words, those with money. There is no incentive for them to change it.
My focus on Land was because it’s difficult to see a more important issue right now. Land feeds us. Land sustains our life. The word Land is a misnomer because I am really referring to Land, Air and Water, in other words, the planet.
Land Air and Water, and the Planet has many different ways to describe it, but Mother Earth is one description. A mother loves her children. A mother would give anything for her children. In days when we were more connected to land and less to money and things, this reciprocity was in our bones. We loved and tended the earth, and Mother Earth loved us back.
Imagine then if there was a political and economic system that was attacking your mum. Would you fight back to stop it? Or if someone said to you “we try to stop hurting your mum, but this is just how it has to be for now”. What would you do?
Th violence is already there. Violence is already being perpetrated against Mother Earth. We can try and avoid violence as we fight back, but we're involved in a fight. And we are already being hurt.
