2 Leaders Debate
We have a 2 party system in the UK. Part of the Brisith myth we have had drummed into us is that this gives us strong stable and sensible government.
As long as you ignore the banking crash of 2007/8, planetary destruction, the inability for young people to own their own home, shit in the river, politicians who break lockdown laws, broken economies and the super wealthy getting richer, this system really is great.
Clearly Its time to try something new.
Until then we had the 2 men who could become the next PM in a Sky program where each are interviewed then have questions from the audience.
First up Starmer. The man who previously looked very weak and failed to confront and aggressive Sunak. This time he came out punching. For the first time ever he came across as mildly less irritating than he normally does.
Whilst the whole time it looked like someone had pressed play and told him not to stop, he at least landed some strong punches for a change. Given that his job is so easy that it’s like punching a baby it’s good to seem him actually punching, unlike last time.
Starmer was talking like a man preparing to run the country.
Then came Rishi. How the atmosphere seemed to change. This looked like a man who was broken. He was apologetic about almost everything, but endlessly saying sorry for his record. I cannot remember a time where weeks out from an election a leader looked like he was so defeated.
The main feeling I was left with was why is he doing it. He’s super wealthy and could be doing really good jobs in nice places, yet here he was in Grimsby.
An audience member seemed to complain that his daughter could no longer buy a house due to the increased rates, despite them saying his daughter was 19, which seems to me to be a pretty good age to be buying a house, but, Sunak made the mistake of saying that he was removing Stamp Duty for purchases up to £425,000. This drew a laugh from the Grimsby audience, probably because the average house price is £42.50.
Sunak seemed more natural and relaxed when taking questions from the audience, but they were mocking, sarcastic and laughing at him. It was a pretty sorry sight to watch but ultimately what happened when you leave office with things worse than you started.
